Veronica Mars stars to reunite on Party Down

“I can’t believe I forgot to add Party Down to my recent list of new shows I’m looking forward to. Not only is it produced by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, but it also stars several Veronica Mars alums. Ken Marino (Vinnie Van Lowe), Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas), Adam Scott (Mr. Rooks), and Jane Lynch (Mrs. Donaldson) have all been cast in lead roles. I know, I know; I was hoping to see Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni or even Kristen Bell on the cast list too. No such luck. But Colantoni is set to guest star in at least one episode, and so is Ed Begley Jr., who played Dean O’Dell in the last season of Veronica Mars. Plus, Thomas said that Bell has expressed interest in appearing on the show.

“She has a gap free at the end [of our shooting schedule], so I think Kristen may appear in the show, which could be really great,” Thomas told the Pittsburg Post-Gazette.

There’s still no news about Dohring potentially showing up (I guess he’s too busy with Washingtonienne), but I’m sure he’d fit right in on this show. Party Down is a comedy that revolves around a group of wannabee actors working the Hollywood catering circuit. It sounds like Kitchen Confidential meets Entourage, but you know, probably a lot funnier.

The show will also star Judd Apatow regular Martin Starr and Lizzy Caplan (True Blood). Paul Rudd, one of my favorite comedic actors, is producing along with Thomas and about half of the Veronica Mars producing team. The show premieres March 20 on STARZ. Will you watch?”

“Elle Bishop might be dead, but the rumors of Kristen Bell reprising the role of Veronica Mars for a big screen outing are still circulating. Actually, a script is being written and a movie deal might already be in place. At least that’s what former Veronica Mars cast member Enrico Colantoni is saying.

In a recent red carpet interview with The TV Addict, Colantoni said that VM creator Rob Thomas is working on a script for a film version of the short-lived CW series. Colantoni is the latest Mars associate to get fans’ hopes up about Veronica’s jump to the big screen. In recent months, Thomas and VM star Kristen Bell have spoken publicly about their love for the series and their hopes for a film project. Colantoni seems confident that the movie will happen.

The actor also told The TV Addict that Thomas had possibly come to an agreement with “Joel” about the film’s production. That “Joel” is most likely Joel Silver, former executive producer of the show (and about a million blockbusters, including The Matrix and Lethal Weapon). If this is true, then it looks like this project might actually become a reality. Let’s just hope Thomas can fit it in while working on the Cupid redo for ABC.

Being a huge fan of the show, I really hope the movie happens. I’d love to see Thomas take Veronica’s world to the big screen, away from the restrictions of network TV. In the book Neptune Noir, Thomas wrote about how he originally envisioned the show as a cable series. He was surprised that UPN didn’t make a fuss about its darker themes and allowed him to stick to his original vision. This leads me to believe that Thomas will have little to no trouble getting his personal vision for a VM feature onscreen if a movie deal is made. And that’s exciting, given how VM was better written, plotted and more complex than most Hollywood films these days.

Still, do you think we need a Veronica Mars movie? I agree with fellow Squader Debra McDuffee that a movie could resolve a lot of the show’s unanswered questions. But, will anyone remember those questions once a movie hits theaters two, three or more years from now? Will anyone, save for a handful of die-hard fans, still care by that point?

I liked the “flash forward” idea Thomas pitched to the network before the show was canceled. Catching up with an older, more seasoned Veronica a few years later, in a completely different setting, sounds like a better idea for a movie than picking up right where the show left off. As far as the plot’s concerned, I’ll take anything, as long as it doesn’t involve a serial rapist. We’ve been down that road before.”

Sostanzialmente il primo articolo dice che vale la pena attendere la messa in onda di “Party Down” che avverrà il 20 marzo su Starz, non solo perchè è uno dei nuovi show scritti da Rob Thomas, padre di Veronica Mars, ma anche perchè fanno parte del cast diversi degli attori dello stesso show da noi amato in ruoli di primo piano come Ryan Hansen e Ken Marino. Il cronista sperava di vedere scritturati per questo show anche Jason Dohring – era questo lo show di Rob Thomas di cui parlava a Toronto? n.d.r.- Kristen Bell – che ha espresso interesse a farne parte – ed Enrico Colantoni – il quale sarà guest star in uno degli episodi – Pare che Rob Thomas abbia infatti confermato il desiderio di Kristen di essere nello show. Il cronista dice che non vi sono notizie a proposito del coinvolgimento di Jason Dohring il quale sarà probabilmente troppo impegnato con il suo nuovo show Washingtonienne, anche se questo “Party Down” gli starebbe davvero a pennello essendo una comedy che gira intorno ad un gruppo di potenziali attori che lavorano nel mondo del catering di Hollywood.

Nel secondo articolo si parla del potenziale film di Veronica Mars, tanto atteso dai suoi agguerriti fans. La voce circola da tempo e pare che sia anche già stato scritto il copione, questo ha detto Enrico Colantoni, grande fan di Veronica Mars lui stesso, inoltre è risaputo che la Bell e Thomas abbiano parlato pubblicamente di questo e che Colantoni sia apparso davvero positivo che il film ci sarà presto, anche perchè sembra che Joel Silver (il  produttore esecutivo di Veronica Mars e anche di Moonlight n.d.r.) e Rob Thomas abbiano già raggiunto un accordo.
Il cronista in qualità di grande fan di Veronica Mars si augura che Thomas riesca a portare sul grande schermo la versione originale scritta per il comic book “Neptune Noir”, versione che fu bocciata dalla CW con grande stupore dello scrittore. Per questo motivo il cronista pensa che Thomas sarebbe ben felice di non dover tener contro delle restrizioni di un network nella preparazione del film a conclusione di uno show così ben scritto da far le scarpe a molte delle produzioni attuali di Hollywood. Un sacco di domande senza risposta restano in sospeso dalla fine di questo show, ma se il film vedrà la luce in 2/3 anni a qualcuno interesseranno ancora le risposte? Il cronista dell’articolo ritiene evidentemente di no e che il promo dell’FBI preparato da Thomas per una ipotetica 4 stagione fosse ben scritto e una buona idea per il futuro film, trascinando Veronica in un mondo completamente diverso. Aggiunge anche che in quanto fan di VM andrebbe bene qualsiasi cosa, purchè non si tratti di uno nuovo violentatore seriale! -citando il filone poco interessante della terza stagione appunto abbastanza deludente n.d.r.-
