“I thought this Friday’s episode was really great – I just felt like it gelled, like you guys all seemed happy to be back.  How was it returning to set after the break?
JD:Yeah, it was all right.  I kind of got practice for that with the last show, so you kind of get used to that.  It was cool because I happened to shoot later in the week; it was already rolling, so it was easy to get back into it.

Wanted to find out if you could describe your character of Josef and maybe some of the challenges for stepping into the role?
JD:Yeah, okay, so I mean I would describe as, I don’t know, a 400 hundred year old bad-ass hedge fund trader who is very humanistic and loves life.  Ii think they use the word bon-vivant which means enjoyer of the luxuries of life.  At the same time, he’s had a bunch of experience.  He understands the threat to getting exposed and that sort of thing as a vampire and what would happen.  It has a lot of context with past historical events and I think they’ve given into that more in the future, that sort of thing.  At the same time, the most difficult thing to get, what that’s really like, being alive back in the 16, 1700s and stuff like that.  Having 200 year old relationships and what that’s really like. I was talking to the writers yesterday about some possible season 2 storylines and history and stuff like that, and huge historical events that you see were influenced and changed by us vampires back then.  It should be comical and interesting.

One of the things, before the series even came out, there seemed like a lot of people weren’t familiar with the concept, or just had heard basic bits of it, and people weren’t even willing to give it a chance.  Do you think that’s still happening where people don’t understand what this show is about, that it’s totally different?
Forgive me if I don’t answer your question totally.  It originally started out as a vampire show and that was cool with the supernatural elements.  What’s really captured people is Mick’s underlying struggle with his life.  It involves Beth and being human and being a vampire and wanting that.  You see in episode 13, the one thing he wants, he wants change, he wanted to be human.  He got it taken away from him in this episode.  It’s pretty emotional, and I think there are a lot of turns coming up.

There are a lot of comparisons.  Vampire shows or vampire movies and such.  Everyone thinks it’s just a reiteration of it.  Really the series is totally different.
Yeah, I totally get you now.  Yeah dude, we started out as vampires, then we just have a fucking, oh sorry, fantastic love story. Back when I originally saw the first 3 or 4 episodes, I was like, dude this is CSI with vampires.  The shooting, going through the veins, coming back out, flying through the buildings of downtown.  We have a lot of cool visually very appealing, and then we have character on top of that and vampire on top of that.  You’re right dude, there’s no other show that has those elements or a vampire show that has those elements.  It’s more like Ann Rice with the love story.

What drew you to taking on this role?  Were you looking to do something different from your Veronica Mars character?
I was looking at doing something, I mean, maybe yeah.  I was looking at probably trying to do some kind of comedy because I was so tired of everybody in my life dying on film.  Sometimes you do a certain role, and you’re looked at as doing that successfully, so I think there was similarities to Logan in Veronica.  I think that’s why I was called on to do it.  I think I’ll wind up doing some comedy films or lighthearted stuff.  At the same time, I start watching movies, and I get the yearning to do really dramatic stuff.  This show kind of has both parts.  They do some heavy stuff and there’s a lot of light stuff as well.

Are there any teases you can give to fans about what’s coming up in the next few episodes?
Yeah, sure.  In 13, which is this Friday’s episode, you get to see Josef go vamp.  He becomes a vampire for the first time on film.  You’ll see, complete with the makeup and teeth.  [SPOILER ALERT]  He actually goes vamp on Mick and turns him.  We’ve had a lot of discussion about this scene.  There is a 30 piece orchestra that we used to do the music on it.  I think it is feature quality, the way we have it all working together.  After he turns into a vampire, you can see what a badass Josef can be, we go and kick some ass with Matrix type stuff.  It’s pretty rad the way these vampires fight.  They have us up on wires, we’re flying through the sky, swirling around in the air and coming down and killing each other.  I think you’ll see some cool stuff in 13.  In 16, you’ll see his softer side of him.  More of his feelings toward a girl.  He’s kind of got these troubles and Mick kind of sits him down and talks him through it.  One of the other points, we’re going to have a lot more in 16 with the vampire mythology.  I think the coolest thing is you see a bunch of vampires come together to solve a problem.  So you have like Guillermo and Logan and other characters that you’ve seen, they’re really funny.  People from different social spectrums and we all get together to work on a problem.  It’s kind of like Ocean’s 11 where we get in there and figure out this big plan and we all kind of attack from our own different way, as this threat is posed of kind of getting exposed.

I was wondering if you could talk about your first day working on the Moonlight set, and general experience working on your first episode?
Boy dude, I was scared. We shot at this guy’s house who owns the Grant Parking lots all over downtown.  He has this really fantastic house and that was my first day.  You don’t know anybody on the crew, that sort of thing.  Most of my scenes were shot on that first day.  It was cool because Alex was right there, and we were talking.  It’s great to have someone there to talk to. You can be like, oh dude, I don’t know what to do with this part of the scene, and it doesn’t feel right to me.  It’s like “okay cool man, try this”.  It was kind of like he got to be there to work it out with you, it’s a blessing.  Yeah, but I was terrified, yeah.  Plus Joel Silver was on set.  He came on set.

I’m glad you mentioned Joel Silver – how is it being perceived on set, now that Moonlight has gone through a couple show runners.  Hopefully, we’re all hoping for a second season.  Does that create major changes at all? 
Yeah, man, and I think I mentioned at the Paley Center yesterday.  We had to eventually write our rules.  What is our show?  What kind of rules do we have as vampires?  What styles do we want?  Gabrielle and Harry have been on since the beginning, so we have certain writers.  We do have a through line of vision, in that sense because we have people that have been on since the beginning, so even though we’ve had somewhat of a similarity.  It’s kind of interesting.  I think we’ve been building. Particularly, 11 and 12 were these fantastic shows and I think 13 and 14 are unbelievable.  I think we have found our way by whatever means to pull it together to come up with something really amazing.  We’re pulling it off, so it’s remarkable.

How involved is Joel in the production? 
I think he’s quite involved.  At least in the storyline.  If he has ideas or he needs to come up with something, he’s always right there to do it.  Even on Veronica Mars, he would call up Paris Hilton to get her on the show, Anthony Anderson.  He would get our big names to the show.  It was kind of what we needed then and are doing now.  He’s Joel, dude.  I think he’s happy with the writing crew that we have now, and they’re leading us in a good direction and he knows that.

What do you draw on for your portrayal?
Dude, I mean, you don’t know any 400 year old vampires, so you kind of gotta do a little imagination, I guess, for the most part of it. I mean you get the idea from like Ann Rice’s novels, what these guys are kind of like.  Their perceptions of the world, and how they get to hear a bit better, understand a bit deeper than maybe just your normal guy.  That kind of stuff combined with the imagination, sort of the flying around, and that sort of power.  And my guy, kill people or have people do it.  It gives you a sense of power that you kind of understand and just step into it.

In talking with the writers, has there been any storylines that have been pushed aside or pushed to next season as a result of the strike?
I don’t know the answer to that question, but I do know, they shared a couple of next season stuff, and there was one idea that just blows me away, man, it’s so unreal.  I thought it was so cool.  I don’t know what they had in store for the whole season if there had been one, but whatever it was, it will come out in season 2.  I guess perhaps, we might have done more with DA Talbot, and he was going to either pose a threat to us or to the Mick and Beth relationship with regard to being the charming man that steps in front of that.  I’m sure we’ll get to all that, if there is a next year.

Wanted to get your take on how you’d describe your character’s relationship with Mick and how you’ve seen that grow and develop as the episodes have gone on?
I mean, it’s funny, because you start with, so he’s been alive for 80 years, I’ve been alive for 400.  We’ve known each other for a fair amount of time.  As actors, you don’t know each other.  I feel like as I get to know him better, I’ve started to feel like I can talk to him in the scenes, if you know what I mean?  Able to laugh with him, kind of inside jokes, it adds to the being on camera element.  The more we establish common ground or a liking and hanging out, that sort of thing, we grow.  These guys are best friends and you see more of that coming through in the next couple episodes.  It’s such a great relationship.  Best friends, and what that is.  Two guys who are quite different and kind of somewhat bust each other balls, and you’ll see that.  I think in episode 14.

Will there be more exploration of Josef’s back-story in the next season?
Yeah, dude.  There will.  There will.  They just told me some stuff last night.  I don’t know that I can say what that is.  You’ll find out where he comes from, what his story was back then, at the very beginning.  You get to find out how he came to be who he is and what happened at the beginning.

How much did you know of his back-story before coming in?  Does that help define how you portray him?
You know, dude, I haven’t known anything about him.  Because I don’t know that it was necessarily brought up yet.  I asked the writers yesterday, like what happened and they told me the simple thing of you’ll find out.  When they hash that story out, it’ll just become more detailed and there will be a whole storyline about it.

Was there instant cast chemistry?
It’s kind of funny.  With Veronica Mars, we all kind of met each other at the table read, so it was like, ok here’s our whole cast.  And then in this show, it was like there was Alex and I kind of joined and Sophia kind of joined, and Shannyn kind of joined, so we all kind of show up different times on the set, so it was a little bit different in that regard.  So we kind of like, over the season, kind of grew to know each other, and would go out together at these different functions at these sort of things.  It wasn’t that we were all hired together and then made any visits together to see fans or to do different junkets and that sort of thing.  We never did that all together until very recently which we kind of did last night.  I don’t know if anybody was there last night at the Paley Center?  It was rad.  You feel like this great family, this great chemistry.  We have such a cool cast, everyone is very, very cool, man.  We kind of all look out for each other, help each other.  It’s just a wonderful vibe.

You were lucky with both Veronica and this show to have a very rabid fan base, possibly more so now than ever.  What are some crazy fan experiences you’ve had?
Oh my gosh.  I don’t know man.  You get these gifts from people.  They’ll send you like a blanket, hand stitched that’s bigger than your bed.  And you just wonder how many reruns of Moonlight they had to watch to build that thing.  It’s like the colors of Moonlight as well, so a lot of thought goes into something like that and a lot of gifts.  Just to have a blood drive, it’s so creative and at the same time very pro-survival.  People need that.  Every single day, people need to have blood given to them.  It’s very important that we’ve aligned ourselves with something that helps people.

What makes a career as an actor rewarding?
I think it’s either performing good work or seeing that you’ve performed good work and seeing it appreciated.  The first time I ever had that experience, I started off with Veronica Mars as kind of an asshole character, a bad character.  It was around episode 6, you kind of saw a different side. And this lady came up to me, and you could tell she was so invested in it.  And she said “I used to hate you, but now I don’t know”.  Just the way she said that.  It was pretty cool.  I was glad to be disliked in a good way because it added to the show.  It was cool how people get so interested.  They are affected.  That’s the joy of it, man.  I think even before, when I said doing good work.  When it’s seen by somebody is the ultimate, even it’s just your cast mate, and he’s like dude, that was awesome, and you’re like okay thanks dude.  It’s that, dude.  Doing good work and having it be appreciated.

What are some of the thoughts about a potential second season of the show?
Maybe sadly enough, it just comes down to people watching the show.  We’ve got to perform well.  We’ve made several decent shows, you know what I mean?  The ones we have coming up are very, very good, and we just need people to watch them.  What you guys are doing is I think the best thing we can do, and just wait.  Just keep promoting it.  We have a great product here, and the more we can promote it and get people to see this, I think they’ll stick, and catch on, so thanks for doing it, and we’re going to do our part to make the shows good. If we can get the promotion and get people watching, I think it’s what it’ll come down to.

There’s good reviews and bad reviews, do you put any thought into the review?
I kind of review it myself, you know what I mean?  I have decided whether I do good work or bad work.  If I think I did good work and it’s appreciated, I know it, but if I do bad work or okay work and it’s appreciated, I feel so bad.  I realize that I kind of have to be my own critic or my own guide to my work.  Otherwise, I start changing what I’m doing, and it’s not as good honestly.  I just kind of stay away from the reviews and stay on what I’m doing.”

TFG:Ho trovato l’episodio di questo venerdì molto bello. Vi ho sentito uniti, come se foste contenti di essere ritornati. Com’è stato ritornare sul set dopo la pausa?

JD: già, è stato bellissimo! Ho fatto pratica nell’ultimo show, quindi mi sono tenuto allenato. é stato fantastico perché ho girato un po’ più tardi questa settimana, è stato tutto molto veloce, quindi è stato facile riprendere.

TFG: mi chiedevo se potevi descrivermi il personaggio di Josef , magari anche alcuni passi fatti per interpretarlo..

JD: si, ok, non so, lo descriverei come un commerciante 400 enne, molto umano, che ama la stessa vita. Penso che usino una parola che significhi “colui che ama le gioie della vita”. Allo stesso tempo ha fatto molte esperienze, capisce il pericolo di essere esposti come vampiro e cosa potrebbe succedere se qualcuno lo scoprisse. Ci sono molte connessioni col passato e credo che ne parleranno in futuro. Allo stesso tempo la cosa più difficile da capire è capire com’è davvero vivere nel 1700. Aver avuto 200 anni di relazioni e capirne il significato.  ieri stavo parlando con gli scrittori di una possibile nuova seconda stagione e di come potrebbe essere la storia, di come importantissimi eventi storici sono stati cambiati da noi vampiri. Deve essere sia comico che interessante!

TFG:Prima che la serie uscisse, una delle cose evidenti era che la gente  sembrava non avere familiarità con il concetto, o che al massimo ne sapesse poco, e quindi erano poco disposte a dargli una chance. Pensi che succeda ancora nelle persone poco informate sul tema trattato dallo show??

JD: perdonami se non rispondo completamente alla tua domanda. Originariamente è partito come uno show coi in vampiri, e quindi con superpoteri ed è era favoloso. ma ciò che cattura di più le persone è Mick che lotta con la sua situazione. Include Beth, e il fatto di voler  essere un vampiro e un  umano. Nell’episodio num 13 , l’unica cosa che vuole è cambiare, diventare umano. C’è molto su di lui in questo episodio. È molto intenso e penso che ci sarà molto da scoprire.

TFG: ci sono un sacco di paragoni tra i film e gli show sui vampiri. Molti pensano sia solo una ripetizione, ma la serie ne parla in modo diverso.

JD: già sono completamente d’accordo. Abbiamo cominciato come vampiri, poi ci siamo innamorati, siamo andati a letto e…ops scusa, grande storia d’amore. Quando ho visto i primi 2 o 3 episodi mi sono detto, cavoli, è CSI con i vampiri però. Tutto, dalle riprese, dallo volare da una palazzina all’altra, abbiamo un sacco di elementi molto coinvolgenti, personaggi e vampiri al top. hai ragione, non ci sono altri film o show di vampiri come questo. è come vedere Anne Rice con una storia d’amore.

TFG: che cosa ti ha spinto ad interpretare questo personaggio? Cercavi qualcosa di diverso da ciò che interpretavi in Veronica mars?

JD: si stavo cercando qualcosa. Forse cercavo qualcosa attinente alla commedia perché sono stanco di vedere gente che muore nei film che faccio. a volte interpreti un certo ruolo e sanno che lo farai bene , quindi penso ci siano delle somiglianze di Logan in Veronica. Penso che è per questo che sono stato chiamato per interpretarlo. Penso che liquiderei ruoli troppo puliti. Ma allo stesso tempo ho cominciato a guardare dei film e ad appassionarmi a delle cose drammatiche. questo show contiene entrambe le parti. ci sono sia parti pesanti che leggere.

TFG: c’è qualche cosa che puoi spifferare ai fan su cosa accadrà nei prossimi episodi?

JD: si, certo. Nel 13 mo, vedrete Josef fare il vampiro. è la prima volta che lo vedrete così. con tanto di denti e trucco, diventa veramente vampiro e si scaglia contro Mick. Abbiamo discusso molto su questa scena. C’è un frammento di musica classica che abbiamo usato come sottofondo. Come è stato montato tutto insieme è di grande qualità. Dopo che si è “trasformato” in vampiro noti quanto cattivo può diventare, ce le diamo stile matrix. È strano il modo in cui i vampiri combattono. ci hanno attaccato a un filo, volavamo come nel cielo, volteggiando nell’aria per poi riscendere e uccidersi a vicenda. Ne vedrete delle belle nel 13 episodio. Nel 16 vedrete il suo lato soft, sui suoi sentimenti per una ragazza. ha questo problema e Mick lo fa sedere e ne parlano. un’altra cosa è che nel 16 episodio ci saranno approfondimento sul mito del vampiro. La cosa più bella è vedere un gruppo di vampiri riunirsi per risolvere il problema. ci saranno personaggi già noti come Gullielmo e Logan che saranno molto divertenti. Persone da ranghi differenti, che si riuniscono per risolvere un problema. È un po’ come in Ocean 11, dove ci si riunisce , si progetta il piano e tutti fanno la loro parte.

TFG: pensavo , potresti parlarci del tuo primo giorno sul set di ML, e in generale, sui tuoi primi giorni sui vari set?

JD: ragazzi, ero spaventato! Abbiamo girato a casa di questo tizio, proprietario di Grant Parking, giù in città. la casa era fantastica ed era il primo giorno. sai, non conosci nessuno dello staff, cose così. La maggior parte delle mie scene sono state girate quel giorno ed è stato fantastico perché eravamo li e Alex e io parlavamo. Sai, è bello avere qualcuno con cui parlare il primo giorno. Puoi dire delle cose del tipo: Ragazzi, oddio non voglio fare sta scena, non ne sono capace!!
E quindi è come se qualcuno ti dicesse “ stai calmo, prova a vedere come viene.” È come se dovesse essere li per aiutarti, è una benedizione. Ma comunque si, ero terrorizzato. In più Joel Silver è arrivato sul set.

TFG: sono felice che tu abbia menzionato Joel Silver- come ha reagito il set di  ML ora che lo show è finito. tutti speriamo in una seconda stagione. Questo creerà dei grandi cambiamenti?

JD: si sai,lo dicevo proprio ieri al Paley center. Ora dobbiamo scriverci le nostre regole. Com’è il nostro show? Che regole abbiamo come vampiri? Che stile vogliamo creare? Gabrielle e Hanry sono stai sul set fin dall’inizio, così abbiamo scrittori assicurati. Abbiamo una visione continua della cosa perché hanno partecipato allo show sin dall’inizio, quindi c’è qualcosa di familiare. È interessante penso che stiamo costruendo qualcosa. Soprattutto l’episodio 11 e 12 sono fantastici. Il 13  e il 14 sono incredibili. Penso che abbiamo trovato la nostra strada, il che significa mettere insieme le nostre idee e realizzarle. Lo stiamo facendo, e il che è straordinario.

TFG: Joel è coinvolto nella produzione?

JD: si, abbastanza.  Almeno nella storia-base. Se ha delle idee da realizzare è sempre pronto a farlo. Persino in Veronica Mars, ha chiamato sia Paris Hilton che  Anthony Anderson. Vuole portare grandi nomi nello show. È quello che ci occorre e che stiamo facendo ora. Lui è Joel ragazzi!! Penso che sia felice degli scrittori dello show, ci stanno portando nella giusta direzione e lo sa!

TFG: quali sono i tuoi segreti per interpretare il personaggio?

JD: oddio ragazzi, sapete, non conosco nessun vampiro di 400 anni, quindi mi tocca usare un po’ di immaginazione, almeno per la maggior parte delle cose. Ti fai un pò un’idea di come sono questi ragazzi grazie alle novelle di Ann Rice. La loro visione del mondo, come fanno per sentirsi un po’ meglio, insomma devi lavorare un po’ di più che per un ragazzo normale. Il tutto unito a un po’ di immaginazione, e un po’ di potere. E ragazzi, o uccidi o commissioni persone che lo facciano per te. Questa cosa ti da un senso di potere pazzesco, ti senti dentro questo tipo di emozioni!

TFG: parlando con gli sceneggiatori c’è stata qualche storia che è stata messa da parte per poi essere usata come  risultato bomba finale?

JD: non lo so! Quello che posso dirti è che so che hanno mischiato un paio di cose relative alla stagione precedente e ragazzi, verrà una cosa quasi irreale. Ho subito pensato fosse fantastico. Non so se hanno qualcosa in cantiere , ma se succederà sarà nella seconda stagione. Credo che avremo a che fare di più con DA Talbot, ci potrebbe mettere i bastoni tra le ruote, a me o alla relazione di Beth e Mick col tornaconto di essere quello che fa l’uomo affascinante con coltello dalla parte del manico. Se ci sarò un prossimo anno sono sicuro che vedremo cose così!

TFG: vorrei sapere da te come vedi l’evoluzione dell’amicizia tra il tuo personaggio e Mick, come è cresciuta e sviluppata durante la stagione.

JD: è buffo perché parti da un punto in cui lui ha 80 anni e il mio personaggio 400. ci conosciamo da molto tempo, ma come attori non ci conoscevamo affatto. Quindi sentivo che dovevo parlare con lui, cercare di conoscerlo per  entrare nella parte, capito? Il fatto di saper ridere e scherzare insieme aggiunge elementi che trapelano anche alle telecamere. Più noi attori avevamo una connessione , più il personaggio cresceva. Questi personaggi sono migliori amici e lo vedrete meglio negli episodi seguenti. È un rapporto fantastico il loro! Due ragazzi diversi ma compatibili, che condividono delle cose! Ci farete caso, credo nell’episodio num 14!

TFG: nella prossima stagione sapremo di più del passato di Josef?

JD: si ragazzi,sicuramente! Mi hanno detto delle cose l’altra sera a proposito! Non so come spiegarvelo. Scoprirete da dove viene, le sue origini! Scoprirete come è diventato così partendo dall’inizio!

TFG: quanto sapevi del suo passato prima di arrivare sul set?e ti ha aiutato a interpretarlo?

JD: non sapevo nulla su di lui, e non sapevo nemmeno  quanto fosse necessario. Ieri ho chiesto agli sceneggiatori cosa gli è accaduto e mi hanno detto le cose che scoprirete. Quando faranno venire la storia a galla sarà tutto molto più dettagliato e si avrà la storia completa.

TFG: c’è stata subito alchimia tra il cast?

JD:è buffo! Con Veronica Mars è stato diverso, ci siamo incontrati tutti per leggere il copione e sapevamo chi erano le persone del cast. Qui invece siamo tutti apparsi in momenti diversi: io e Alex,  Sophia, Shannon ecc. ci siamo conosciuti attraverso la stagione, cercando di conoscerci, uscire insieme, ci siamo noleggiati a vicenda per andare a vedere fan, o andare a diverse feste ecc. Non siamo stati tutti insieme fino all’altra sera. Non so c’eravamo tutti l’altra sera al Paley Center? È stato bellissimo,  una grande famiglia con una grande alchimia. Un cast fantastico, tutti lo sono. tutti ci aiutiamo a vicenda, ci prediamo cura degli altri ecc ecc. è meraviglioso.

TFG: sei stato fortunato sia con Veronica che qua ad avere un rango di fan scatenate, raccontaci qualche episodio che ti è capitato.

JD: oddio, non  saprei. Ricevo dei regali dalle persone. Ti mandano coperte, cose così, che sono più grandi del tuo letto. E ti chiedi quante volte hanno guardato ML per fare quella cosa per te. E’ come i colori di ML. Solo la raccolta di sangue è allo stesso tempo così umanitaria. Le persone ne hanno bisogno,ogni singolo giorno. È bello che facciamo qualcosa per aiutare anche le altre persone.

TFG:cosa premia la carriera di un attore ?

JD: pensa sia un misto tra lavorare bene, vedere che hai lavorato bene e vedere il tutto apprezzato da un terzo .la prima volta che ho avuto questo riscontro è stato con Veronica Mars. All’inizio interpretavo un ragazzaccio poi verso il 6 episodio le cose sono cambiate. Una ragazza è venuta da me e  mi ha detto: “ Prima ti odiavo, ma ora non è più così”! il modo in cui l’ha detto è stato fantastico. È stato bello “essere odiato” in modo positivo ed è bello vedere che le persone lo seguono. sono come infettate. Questo è il bello di questo lavoro. Lo stesso accade anche quando una persona che lavora con te apprezza quello che fai e tu rispondi “Hey amico, grazie” : è questo, fare un bel lavoro e venire apprezzati.

TFG: che pensieri hai su una potenziale seconda stagione?

JD: un po’ tristi a dire il vero. Molte persone hanno smesso di guardare lo show. Dobbiamo eseguire il tutto al meglio. Abbiamo fatto dei bellissimi show, e quello che sta per arrivare sarà fantastico, ma abbiamo bisogno di gente che lo guardi. C’è da aspettare un po’ di tempo. noi ce la stiamo mettendo tutta. Continuate a promuoverlo. Abbiamo delle belle cose da presentarvi,dobbiamo solo promuoverle e fare in modo che la gente le guardi, Penso che poi si innamoreranno , quindi grazie , stiamo facendo del nostro meglio per promuovere lo show. Se riusciamo a promuoverlo bene e  a farlo guardare, penso che siamo a cavallo!!

TFG: ci sono critiche buone e cattive…fai caso alle critiche?

JD: critico me stesso, capisci ciò che intendo? Io decido se fare un lavoro buono o cattivo che sia. Se faccio un buon lavoro ed è apprezzato lo so, ma se faccio un brutto lavoro ed è apprezzato allora mi arrabbio. So che devo essere il miglior critico per me stesso. Dall’altro canto sto cominciando a cambiare su questo campo, e onestamente non è poi così buono .cerco il più possibile di stare lontano dalle critiche e concentrarmi su quello che faccio!

El episodio del Viernes fue estupendo.Sentí que todo encajaba y que todos estábais  felices de estar de vuelta ¿ Cómo fue regresar después del parón ?

JD:Sí ,estuvo bien. Creo que ya tengo práctica después del ultimo show , así que parece que te acostumbras. Estuvo genial porque empecé a rodar ya avanzada la semana ; la cosa estaba en marcha y fue fácil reincorporarse.

Quisiera que me describieras  tu personaje y me comentaras los posibles retos de avanzar en él .

JD:Sí, claro. Lo describiría como un tipo complicado ,  de 400 años ,  inversor de fondos , muy humanista y que ama la vida. Le va muy bien la expresión “ bon-vivant “ , que se aplica a una persona que disfruta de los placeres y los lujos de la vida. Además , es un tipo con mucha experiencia. Comprende el desafío que supone como vampiro el quedar expuesto y lo que podría ocurrir a causa de ello. Al mismo tiempo , lo más difícil de entender es cómo era vivir en el pasado , en 1.700 , tener relaciones desde 200 años atrás y todo eso.
Estuve hablando con los guionistas sobre posibles líneas argumentales para la segunda temporada , Historia y todo eso. Y cómo los acontecimientos históricos podrían estar influenciados por los vampiros. Sería cómico e interesante.

Antes de que la serie apareciera , parece como que un montón de gente no estuviera familiarizada con el concepto o sólo tuviera una idea muy simple , de modo que no estuvieran por darle una oportunidad ¿ Crees que ocurre aún que la gente no comprenda de qué va esta serie ?

JD:Perdona si no respondo a tu pregunta por entero. La serie comenzó como una historia de vampiros  y estaba genial con todos esos elementos sobrenaturales.  Lo que realmente enganchó al público fue la lucha interior que mantiene Mick sobre su vida. Cómo involucra a  Beth y si lo que quiere es ser humano o vampiro . Esto se ve en el episodio 13 . Lo único que él desea es cambiar , volver a ser humano. Es algo bastante emocional .

Hay un montón de comparaciones.  Series de vampiros , películas sobre vampiros y todo eso . Muchos piensa que es más de lo mismo , pero la serie es diferente.

JD:Sí, empezamos con una historia de vampiros , pero después tenemos una jodida , perdón, fantástica historia de amor. Cuando vi los 3-4 primeros episodios pensé “tío , esto es CSI con vampiros”. Tenemos un montón de elementos  muy visuales y atractivos y , por encima de todo , el personaje del vampiro. Tienes razón . No hay otra peli o serie sobre vampiros con esos elementos .Es más  del estilo de Anne Rice mezclado con una historia de amor.

¿Qué te llevó a aceptar este personaje ? ¿ Buscabas algo distinto al que interpretabas en Verónica Mars ?

JD:Sí , probablemente . Buscaba hacer algo que tuviera cierta comicidad  , porque ya estaba harto de tantas muertes en la vida de Logan.  Algunas veces haces un papel y te consideran por haberlo hecho bien, y , como creo que hay ciertas similitudes con Logan , pienso que es por lo que me llamaron.
Creo que terminaré por rodar algunas pelis  cómicas. He estado también viendo algunas películas y me han entrado ganas de hacer algo dramático. Pienso que la serie tiene de las dos cosas : partes drámaticas y partes más ligeras .

¿Hay algo que puedas adelantar a los fans de los próximos capítulos?

JD:Claro.En el 13, que es el de este Viernes, ves a Josef transformarse en vampiro.Es la primera vez que ocurre en la serie . Lo verás enterito con todo el maquillaje.  [AVISO DE SPOILER ] El vampiriza a  Mick y lo convierte de nuevo. Tuvimos una larga discusión sobre cómo hacer la escena.Hay una orquesta de 30 instrumentos para interpretar la música que suena de fondo. Creo que es una muestra de calidad, la forma en que trabajamos como equipo.
Después de que se transforme , puedes ver qué malote puede ser Josef . Vamos y pateamos un montón de culos en el mejor estilo Matrix. Es bastante excitante  ver la forma en que luchan. Nos tenían colgados de cables , estábamos volando , girando en el aire , bajando y matándonos unos a otros.
En el 16 verás el  lado más tierno de Josef. Más de sus sentimientos hacia una chica ;  cómo Mick y él se sientan y hablan sobre ello .Por otra parte , tendremos algo más de mitología vampírica. Una de las cosas más guays es que ves a un puñado de vampiros reunidos para solucionar un problema.Así que tienes a Guillermo,  a Logan y a otros personajes que ya has visto y que son divertidos . Gente de diversas extracciones sociales que va a trabajar en equipo para resolver algo. Es como Ocean´s 11  en versión vampira . Estamos juntos , tenemos un plan y cada uno lo aborda a su modo.

Me preguntaba si podrías contarnos cómo fue tu primer día en el set de rodaje  y , en general , cómo te sentiste en tu primer episodio .

JD:Tío, estaba asustado. Rodamos en la casa de se tipo que es dueño de Grant Parking ( La Mansión Goldstein . N . de la t.)  Tiene esa fantástica casa y allí se desarrolló mi primer día. Llegas y no conoces a nadie  del equipo y todo eso. La mayoría de mis escenas se rodaron en ese primer día. Estuvo bien porque Alex estaba allí y estuvimos charlando. Es estupendo tener a alguien con quien hablar . Puedes estar inquieto sobre qué hacer con una parte de una escena y eso no te hace sentir bien. Es como “vale , prueba así”. Fue genial que él estuviera allí , una bendición. Pero yo estaba aterrorizado . Y,  encima ,  Joel Silver estaba en el set .

Me alegra que menciones a Joel Silver . Todos esperamos una segunda temporada de la serie ¿ hay más posibilidades de que se ruede? 

JD:Sí , y creo que lo mencioné en el Paley Center ayer. Tenemos que escribir nuestras normas ¿ Qué es nuestro show ? ¿Cuáles son nuestras reglas como vampiros? ¿ Qué estilo queremos ?  Gabrielle y Harry han estado ahí desde el principio , así que ya tenemos  guionistas. Tenemos también una visión determinada de la historia  porque hay personas que han estado desde el inicio . En ese sentido es muy interesante y pienso que hemos construído algo . Particulamente , pienso que el 11 y el 12 eran fantásticos  y que el 13 y el 14 son increíbles. Creo que hemos encontrado nuestro camino , porque ponemos en conjunto nuestras aportaciones para crear algo asombroso . Y eso es excepcional .

¿ Cómo está Joel de involucrado en la producción? 

JD:Bastante . Al menos , en el guión. Si tiene ideas o necesita presentar algo , va derecho a por ello. Incluso en Verónica Mars, ha llamado a  Paris Hilton para tenerla en el show.Es Joel , tío. Creo que está satisfecho con el equipo de guionistas , que nos está llevando por muy buen camino , y él lo sabe.

¿ A qué recurriste para tu interpretación?

JD:Bueno , supongo que no conoces a ningún vampiro de 400 años , así que hay que echarle un poco de imaginación. Tienes una idea ,  por las novelas de Ann Rice , acerca de cómo son, de sus percepciones del mundo , de cómo oyen  mejor y comprenden las cosas con más profundidad que un hombre normal. Así que partes de ese material y lo combinas con un algo de imaginación. Y luego está el poder .Mi personaje mata gente o tiene a otros que lo hacen por él . Eso te da una sensación de poder que te ayuda a meterte en el personaje .

¿ Ha habido tramas que se hayan dejado de lado o pospuesto con vistas a una segunda temporada como resultado de la huelga de guionistas?

JD:No lo sé . Compartieron con nosotros algunas cosas del material de la próxima temporada , y había una idea que me enloqueció , tío. Creo que era genial. No sé que tendrán preparado para la nueva temporada , si la hay . Imagino que podríamos tener más cosas relativas a Talbot , el  ayudante del Fiscal del Distrito :si va a suponer una amenaza para nosotros , o incluso para la relación entre Mick y Beth , como el hombre encantador que se mete por enmedio. Estoy seguro de que tendremos mucho de eso, si hay otra temporada.

Quisiera que describieras la relación de tu personaje con Mick y cómo crees que se desarrolla en los episodios .

JD:Bueno , es divertida .Empezamos con que él tiene 80 años y yo 400. Nos conocemos desde hace un montón de tiempo. Pero como actores no nos conocíamos de nada. Siento que tengo que conocerle mejor , hablar con él , reirnos , contarnos chistes … todo eso ayuda a crear esa relación frente a la  cámara . Cuanto más descubrimos aficiones o cosas en común, mejor resulta.
Es una gran relación. Son dos tíos que son muy diferentes y sin embargo, son los mejores amigos ,  con todo lo que implica. Y un poco rompepelotas el uno con el otro. Creo que todo se aprecia muy bien en el episodio 14.

¿ Se explorará más la historia de Josef en la segunda temporada?

Jd:Si, lo harán . Me dijeron algunas cosas la pasada noche. Sabremos sus orígenes: cómo se convirtió en lo que es y en quién es y qué le ocurrió al principio.

¿ Cuánto sabías de su pasado ? ¿ Te ayudó a definir cómo lo interpretarías ?

JD:No sabía nada sobre él . Le pregunté a los guionistas y simplemente me respondieron que ya lo iría descubriendo.

¿ Surgió una química instantánea entre los miembros del reparto?

JD:Es divertido . Con Verónica Mars, todos nos conocimos  en la mesa de lectura del guión , así que fue como “ ah, vale , aquí estamos todos”. En esta serie nos fuimos conociendo paulatinamente. Primero estaba  Alex , luego se unió Sophia , luego Shannyn … Así que fuimos apareciendo por el set en momentos diferentes . De modo que , durante la temporada, nos hemos ido conociendo.No fue como si nos hubieran contratado a la vez y ,  desde entonces, asistido todos a encuentros con fans , fiestas y esas cosas.Nunca hemos hecho nada de eso juntos , hasta anoche en el Paley Center. Fue estupendo . Sientes que estás en una gran familia  y que existe una química extraordinaria . Tenemos un reparto genial , en el que cada uno es muy , pero que muy bueno . Estamos ahí para los demás , ayudándonos unos a otros  y eso es una sensación  maravillosa .

Has  sido agraciado , tanto con Verónica Mars como con Moonlight con una rabiosa comunidad de fans , ¿ Cuáles son las experiencias más locas que has tenido con fans ?

JD:Dios , no sé. Te llegan regalos de gente. Te envían cosas como una  manta hecha a mano que es más grande que tu cama . Y te preguntas cuántas reposiciones de Moonlight han tenido que ver para hacer eso.
El tener una campaña para la  donación de sangre, es algo tan creativo  y al mismo tiempo tan pro-vida… La gente necesita sangre . Cada día hay alguien que necesita sangre donada por otro. Es muy importante que nos comprometamos con algo que ayude a la gente.

 ¿ Qué hace gratificante la carrera de actor?
JD:Creo que tanto hacer un buen trabajo como ver que lo has hecho bien y que se te reconoce así . La primera vez que tuve esa experiencia fue en  Verónica Mars , con ese personaje gilipollas . Fue en el episodio 6 cuando noté algo distinto. Una señora se me acercó y me dijo“ antes te odiaba, ahora no lo sé “. Sólo la manera en que lo dijo , fue guay. Y yo estaba contento de no gustarle, porque eso mejoraba el show .Es genial cómo la gente se interesa. Les conmueve . Esa es la alegría de este trabajo.Cuando haces un buen trabajo y alguien lo valora , incluso si es tu compañero de reparto, es lo más. Es eso , tío . Hacer un buen trabajo y que se aprecie como tal.
¿ Qué pensáis sobre una hipotética segunda temporada?

JD:Es triste , pero todo depende de que la gente vea la serie .Tenemos que seguir haciéndolo bien. Hemos hecho cosas estupendas , pero lo que viene ahora es muy , muy bueno y solo necesitamos gente dispuesta a verlo.Lo que vosotros hacéis es lo mejor que se puede hacer , aparte de esperar: Sólo seguir promocionándolo .Tenemos un gran producto y hay que promocionarlo y conseguir que la gente lo vea . Por nuestra parte , sólo podemos hacer nuestro trabajo lo mejor posible .Si podemos conseguir la publicidad y que el público nos siga , creo que todo irá bien.

Hay críticas buenas y malas ¿ les haces caso?

JD:Intento hacer la crítica yo mismo , no sé si me entiendes . Yo decido si hago un  buen o un mal trabajo . Si creo que lo he hecho bien y lo valoran, lo sé ; pero si pienso que he estado fatal  o regular y me dicen lo contrario , me siento mal . Entiendo que he de ser mi propio crítico o guía en mi trabajo.  Si no , empezaría a cambiar cosas y eso no sería honesto . Intento alejarme de las críticas y centrarme en lo que hago.
