Q. You weren’t in the original pilot; how much of the role of Josef was changed by yourself and by the writers, obviously because you’re completely different than the original actor?
JD: I don’t know if you ever saw that little teaser, but I only saw about 6 minutes of the original. The guy was much older – a fantastic actor, actually – but he was more of a mentor, I guess, and Josef is like that but also a big playboy which wasn’t really didn’t really vibe with [Rade Serbedzija]. So that’s the biggest thing. But that guy is amazing. He’s been in every single movie, man. I looked up his credits and it’s like you just keep scrolling.

Q. Did they come to you for the role then, after they decided to recast, or did you have to go through the process like everyone else does?
JD: I think they were just gonna go in a different direction with it and Joel Silver had called ‘cuz it’s similar character, obviously, to Logan. So Joel had been with us on that show for the last three years and he just thought maybe we could do it. I had to go through network and studio and all that stuff, too. Then we still had to do a screentest after that, which was the first screen test I’ve ever done. It’s so cool because you show up and they get in full wardrobe and full makeup, and then you shoot a scene from it. You shoot it many times, as though you were gonna shoot it for the show or something like that. Which is great because you can try all kinds of different things; it’s not like one time and you’re out of the room. You can try different things and then they can use what they like. It’s pretty cool, man. I tell that story because I think Alex was just such a sweetheart. I was pretty worked up, I was pretty nervous, but he was so grounded. He was really looking at me when I was doing my stuff and then he would smile when he was off camera, and it would kind of bring me up. It was just really cool. He walked me right into the role.

Q. You’ve built quite a fanbase at Veronica Mars and a number of them have followed you over to Moonlight. Was that something that was totally unexpected to you?
JD: Dude, the fans are unbelievable on this show! I mean I think it was probably Veronica in general. I don’t know if you know, but we got nominated for that Peoples Choice Award thing. It’s for Best New Drama and the other two nominees are all Veronica Mars, I mean there’s a Veronica Mars cast member on each of the new shows that got nominated. So, I don’t know, these fans are probably just pushing the button over and over to get us nominated with is unbelievable. When I was originally shooting Veronica, I didn’t think anyone was watching in the first place. It’s cool to go to a mall tour or something and there’s fans there and you’re like, Wow! People are actually watching!

Q. You talked a lot earlier this year at ComicCon about Josef’s backstory, about being alive 400 years and all these experiences he had with Mozart and other famous people. Obviously with all due respect to the writers, but how much do you know about where Josef is going in future episodes and how much of his backstory we’re going to get?
JD: That’s a good question and in this week’s episode which airs this Friday is probably the biggest episode I’ve had because you find out there are personal reasons that he kind of hates the fact that Mick and Beth are together. You see an experience that somewhat justifies his behavior toward Mick and Beth. You know, he’s always warning Mick about whatever, and you find out there’s a reason for it. It’s actually a very cool storyline; I’ll be curious to see what you guys think of it. There’ll be stuff in the future episodes which I’ve heard the storylines for and that sort of thing, but so far this is the biggest one and I’m pretty proud of it.

Q. How do you feel about being the youngest actor out of all the stars of the show, while portraying the oldest character?
JD: Dude, that’s the hardest part! It’s so funny to see Alex who is kind of like my mentor or whatever in real life; he’s such a cool guy and it’s funny to have to like be able to own him so to speak or whatever, to take him under your wing. You know what I mean? He’s like your guy that you’re leading through the story. So I feel like I’m starting to get what that’s like. That was pretty much the hardest part for me at the start was getting the feel of, like, he is the oldest guy, so I’m starting to work with that. I gotta give a little bit of an apology to the fans ‘cuz I know that that was missing, but I’m working on it.

Moonlight-Detective.com: I was wondering about this tension that we seen when Josef and Beth have a scene together. Do you have any idea what that’s about, or is that something that you and Sophia just kind of play off of?
JD: I don’t know, she’s so funny. She’s very funny on set. She’s very British, obviously, and there’s stuff that she’ll say, she’ll make lewd references to different stuff and that sort of thing. You know, just “take off your pants, etc.” when we’re in the middle of a scene. It’s just funny, it’s just happened like that. I just had an idea to kind of put whatever I was gonna put into it and then she started playing around with me a little bit in the middle of scenes. It’s Mick and Beth’s storyline but it would be obviously dramatic if I could do something very offensive to Mick or something.

Moonlight-Detective.com: It reads well on screen, it’s very interesting.
JD: That’s cool. Thanks.

Q. What are the differences and similarities between working on this show and working on Veronica Mars?
JD: It’s a much bigger show. The cast is bigger and we shoot on the same stage as East of Eden and Streetcar [Named Desire] where shot. It’s the same stage, I mean, there’s so much history there, and it’s not three hours away. (laughs) It’s fantastic. You can definitely feel that it’s bigger. You get this big comfy trailer. (laughs)

Q. Do you feel like there’s more network support with this then?
JD: Yeah, I mean the network was pretty to cool to us, I feel, on the last show. We had a good run, three years. I know they were talking about some storylines for season 4 [of VM], if they would’ve done one. But, yeah, I’m very happy to be on this show. It’s funny, you don’t have to do anything different and you get three times as many people watching. I can’t even think what that … I mean, 8 million people? I haven’t even met half-a-million people in my whole life. Every week you go into people’s homes and it’s so funny to meet people on the street ‘cuz they know you and you don’t know them yet. It’s just very funny, man, very funny.

Q. Something I think that distinguishes Moonlight is the way that vampires are treated more realistically. There aren’t a lot of prosthetic monsters and that kind of thing on the show. I was wondering, as an actor, how do you approach the fantasy element? How do you incorporate that into knowing that you are this, I know that there’s a process to making the character seem old, but of being an otherworldly thing? Does that ever play into your head?
JD: Yeah, totally man. I guess there’s the fact that you take that on as an actor. And also when you’re doing the special effects and flying around and you can pick things up and throw ‘em across the room, like big beams and shit like that, like, it’s easier to buy that. And there’s special things that Mick does, particularly, that you go oh, okay, cool. You know, the special powers, the special abilities. And with the special effects the way they are now, you can go in through the bodies and you can smell and you can see the veins and stuff like that. It’s just cool the way they do it. They do it through the post-production work. There’s what we do as actors or whatever, but I feel what sells it more is all these extra things that are added into the story, you know, about things they can do and with the special effects, people go, “hmmm, interesting, this is different.”

Q. So both Josef and Logan are smarmy bad boys, but with some heart. How do you approach them differently with that kind of similar vibe connecting the two characters?
JD: You kinda just take on what that’s like. I’m starting to get how Josef walks, it’s not the same, you know, how he sits. It’s kind of like, there’s kind of this feline thing with vampires. I think I’m starting to get that. It’s a little more graceful; they’re aware of their movements, aware of how they’re perceived. That wasn’t like the beach kid on VM. More awareness of perceptions and how you wanna be perceived.

Q. What was your favorite vampire movie of all time?
JD: Lost Boys – that’s what I grew up on. That was so scary when I first saw it as a kid.

Moonlight-Detective.com: What does Josef do? Where does he get his money?
JD: He kind of makes mention of it in the first episode. He’s more or less a stock trader, a hedge fund trader, those are pretty similar. And he owns real estate around town. We just filmed this awesome episode where this – I don’t know, this is kind of a teaser – there’s this vampire that makes me look like a pauper. I think it’s cool. This guy comes out, and you get right into the history of where this guy comes from and he kind of puts me way out of my league, which is amazing and you find out some awesome story points about that. That’s episode 12 which I think will be very, very good.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Is that our Josef cliffhanger, going into the reruns?
JD: Uh, yeah, there is a cliffhanger, that’s for sure, in 12. It’s funny, ‘cuz we don’t know quite how it’s gonna go either, until this strike gets resolved and then we’ll find out more storylines.

Q. Did you do any research on vampires before you took this role? Or did you just go in it and just do it?
JD: No, I had to do a little bit because I wasn’t familiar with it, honestly, until like I started getting into it and then I was like, damn dude, there’s just so much. I’m gonna continue to do research as I keep going, but basically the Anne Rice novels and that sort of thing, just checking those out. The subjective things, like when I said it’s all about the cinematography and special effects, it’s interesting because you do have to play it subjectively as an actor, like with that catlike thing, and their ability to perceive what’s going on with somebody else, and hearing things and whatever. I mean, they’re sharp, man, these guys are very sharp. And then they have individual qualities within them, you know, you have character within the vampire genre and then we have our own genre, so it makes for a lot of, uh…

Q. Right, because some of the rules have changed from some movies to this on what vampires can and can’t do and how they can be killed and whatnot.
JD: Oh yeah, like we can go in the daylight and crosses and that sort of thing. We just had this scene where I was playing pool with Mick and I hold the cues like it’s a cross; it was fucking cute, it was cool.

Q. With Veronica you spent a lot of time on the bubble and you didn’t know what was gonna happen and whether it was coming back, and now there’s this strike putting everything on hold. What do you do? The show doesn’t stop but you stop working, how were you planning on filling your days and living with this character in the meantime and kind of keeping everything on standby?
JD: Yeah, that’s a good point. There was an interview a few days ago where Les [Moonves] said kind good things about the show and the possibility of it coming back whenever the writers strike gets solved, which is very cool. I know Alex has worked really hard, so I know we’re gonna go to motorcycle school and learn to ride street bikes, just go to the professional class. Then go to Australia for New Year’s with the wife, which will be cool. I think we’re going to hook up with Alex there for New Year’s, and just hang out. He’s so cool man, this guy! (laughs) Seriously, just hanging out with him is, uh, I don’t know if you guys have met him or interviewed him, but I think he’s a real gentleman. It’s so cool, we’re so lucky to have the cast we have.

Q. I was wondering if there are any other projects you’re involved with on the horizon? I know we talked with you a while ago and I think it was Dreamland it was called, the Timothy McVeigh movie…
JD: That kind of fell through, that project. I don’t know that they’ll redo it, but I’ve been doing some research and background on it anyway, in case they do it. I think I’ve got a cool idea of this guy, man, so if that ever comes through I think it’ll be a really cool story. I just shot a little short film with a bunch of friends of mine, it’s called Struck. I play just this cute little guy or whatever, way different than these other roles that I’ve been doing recently, so that was a nice change of pace. There might be some other films coming up that I might get into. It’s just tough because if you film for like a month in January or February and then all of a sudden the show comes back, you leave ‘em with a half-complete film. Most people wanna take you in second position, so to speak.

Q. I know that everyone’s worried about the writers’ strike. I think the popularity of the show is so strong that in the even that the strike lasts for many months, which hopefully it doesn’t, but it looks like it will, are you confident that Joel [Silver] and Warner Bros. and CBS will keep the show alive?
JD: I think so. I do. I have to speak for myself, you know, it’s not like I can speak for the producers, but yeah, I feel like our ratings are pretty strong, our fans are unbelievable, so yeah. I think we’re one of two shows that have showed improvements in the ratings, which is obviously a very good sign. And what I said earlier about Les talking about a second season, I think that’s very hopeful.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Going back to the character of Josef, you’ve talked a lot about his interactions with Mick, but we never have seen how they met up and how they became friends. Do you know how they became friends? Is that something we’re gonna see before too long?
JD: I hope so. We haven’t shot it yet, and I haven’t heard any storylines about that, but, something happens this week that took place right around the time I met him. You’re gonna see some other parts, not him but his identity and different times that he was in. He wasn’t quite as cynical back then. You’ll see some stuff like that coming up, like flashbacks, me parting my hair. (laughs)

Moonlight-Detective.com: That sounds cool!
JD: Yeah, it should be cool, I think you guys will like it.

Q. Just real quick is the 12th episode the last one before you guys go on hiatus?
JD: Yeah, that’s it. We just wrapped that, like three days ago. [Episode 1.11 “Love Lasts Forever” airs January 4 and episode 1.12 “The Mortal Cure” airs January 11.] I think there’s stuff too that you guys will like that Sophia did in episode 11 that will fucking blow you away. I really do.

D. Quando hanno deciso di rivedere il cast sono arrivati direttamente a te per il ruolo di Josef o hai fatto un casting?
JD: credo avessero semplicemente deciso di andare in un’altra direzione e  Joel Silver mi aveva chiamato perché il personaggio di Josef è simile, ovviamente, a Logan. Joel era stato con noi (sul set di Veronica Mars) negli ultimi tre anni e pensava potessi interpretare questa parte. Sono comunque dovuto passare attraverso i provini . Dopo di che ho anche dovuto fare uno screentest , che è stato il primo per me. E ‘così figo perché tu ti presenti e loro ti aspettano con un intero guardaroba e il makeup, e poi girano subito una scena. La si gira molte volte, come se la si facesse per lo show o qualcosa di simile. Il che è fantastico perché si può provare cose diverse; non è come se avessi una sola chance e poi sei fuori. Puoi provare cose diverse e poi possono usare ciò che gli piace di più.  E stato  davvero splendido. Ti racconto queste cose perché penso che Alex è stato davvero un tesoro. Avevo lavorato parecchio ed ero piuttosto nervoso, ma lui è stato così ragionevole. Mi guardava davvero mentre recitavo la mia parte e poi sorrideva quando non era nella scena, come se volesse tirarmi su. E ‘stato davvero meraviglioso. Mi ha accompagnato dritto nel cuore del mio ruolo.

D. Hai costruito un bel fanbase con Veronica Mars e un certo numero di fan ti hanno seguito in Moonlight. Te lo aspettavi?
JD: Amico, i fans di questo show sono incredibili! Voglio dire penso che probabilmente Veronica in generale è incredibile. Non so se sapete, ma abbiamo avuto la nomination per il “People Choice Award”. La nomination era per il miglior “new drama” gli altri due candidati erano di Veronica Mars, voglio dire c’è un membro del cast di Veronica Mars in ognuno dei nuovi show che hanno ricevuto le nomination. Quindi, non so, questi fans probabilmente stanno premendo il pulsante più e più per  vederci in nomination e questo è incredibile. Quando originariamente stavo girando Veronica, in primo luogo non credevo che la gente ci stesse guardando. E ‘bello andare in tour nei centri commerciali e scoprire che ci sono dei fan ad aspettarti, e tu pensi “Wow! Le persone ci stanno effettivamente guardando!”

D. All’inizio di quest’anno, durante il ComicCon, hai parlato molto a proposito della storia di Josef, l’essere in vita da 400 anni e tutte queste esperienze avute con Mozart e altri personaggi famosi. Ovviamente con tutto il rispetto per gli sceneggiatori, ma cosa sai di cosa succederà in futuro a Josef, e quanto della sua storia passata scopriremo?
JD: È una buona domanda e nell’episodio di questa settimana che andrà in onda venerdì, che è probabilmente il più grande episodio che ho girato perché si scoprono le ragioni personali di Josef nell’odiare il fatto che Mick e Beth stiano insieme. Si vede che ha avuto un’esperienza che giustifica il suo comportamento verso Mick e Beth. Sapete, lui è sempre pronto ad avvertire Mick su qualunque cosa, e si scopre che c’è un motivo per questo. La trama è molto bella; sono curioso di sentire cosa ne pensate. Ci saranno cose interessanti negli episodi futuri di cui ho sentito le trame, ma finora questo è il migliore e ne sono molto orgoglioso.

D. Come ti senti ad essere l’attore più giovane nel cast dello show, mentre interpreti il personaggio più vecchio?
JD: Amico, è la parte più difficile! E ‘così divertente vedere Alex, che è come il mio mentore o qualunque altra cosa nella vita reale; è un ragazzo in gamba ed è divertente dover essere il suo “mentore”, per così dire, o qualunque altra cosa, e tenerlo sotto la propria ala. Sai cosa voglio dire? E’ come se fosse “il tuo figliolo” che stai guidando attraverso la storia. Così mi sento come se cominciassi a sentire davvero la parte. La parte più difficile per me all’inizio è stato ottenere la sensazione dell’essere il più vecchio,e ora sto iniziando ad abituarmici. Devo scusarmi un po’ con i fans per questo, perché so che era una cosa che mancava nel personaggio, ma ci sto lavorando.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Mi chiedevo di questa tensione che abbiamo visto quando Josef e Beth hanno una scena insieme. Avete idea di che cosa sia, o è soltanto qualcosa che tu e Sophia mettete su?
JD: Non lo so, lei è così divertente. E ‘molto divertente sul set. Lei è molto britannica, ovviamente, e ci sono cose che dirà, riferimenti osceni a cose diverse e cose del genere. Sapete, come “togliti i pantaloni, ecc” quando siamo nel mezzo di una scena. E’ troppo divertente, è successo per caso. Avevo appena avuto l’idea di mettermi in mezzo e poi lei ha iniziato a giocare con me nel mezzo delle scene. E’ la storia di Mick e Beth , ma sarebbe drammatico se, ovviamente, facessi qualcosa di molto offensivo verso Mick o qualcosa del genere.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Lo vedrei bene sullo schermo, è molto interessante.
JD: Bene. Grazie.

D. Quali sono le differenze e le analogie tra lavorare a questo show e lavorare in Veronica Mars?
JD: E ‘uno spettacolo molto più grande. Il cast è più grande e giriamo sullo stesso set dove sono stati girati “la Valle dell’Eden” e “Un Tram Chiamato Desiderio”. E’ proprio lo stesso set, voglio dire, c’è così tanta storia lì, e non di tre ore di distanza. (ride) E’ fantastico. Hai la sensazione che è qualcosa di più grande. […]

D. Pensi che su questo show ci sia più supporto da parte del network allora?
JD: Sì, voglio dire il network è stata piuttosto carino con noi, credo, durante lo show precedente. Abbiamo avuto un buon periodo, tre anni. So che si è parlato di alcune storylines per la stagione 4 [di VM], se ne avessero fatto una. Ma, sì, sono molto felice di essere in questo show. E ‘divertente, non devi fare niente di diverso e si ottiene tre volte il numero degli spettatori. Non ci posso neanche pensare …voglio dire, 8 milioni di persone? Non ho incontrato nemmeno mezzo milione di persone in tutta la mia vita. Ogni settimana si va in casa della gente ed è così divertente di incontrare gente per strada che ti conosce, mentre tu non li conosci ancora. E davvero molto divertente, sai, molto divertente.

D. Qualcosa che penso distingua Moonlight è il fatto che i vampiri sono trattati in maniera più realistica. […] Mi chiedevo, come attore, come ti approcci  all’ elemento fantastico? Come fai ad impersonare (un vampiro) essendo consapevole di ciò sei, so che c’è un processo per far sembrare il personaggio vecchio, ma ne esiste uno per interpretare qualcosa che non è di questo mondo? Ti è mai venuto in mente?
JD: Sì, assolutamente. Immagino che il fatto sia che la affronti come attore. E anche quando si sta facendo gli effetti speciali di volo e circa ed è possibile prendere le cose e scagliarle per tutta la stanza, come grosse travi e roba del genere, come, è più facile crederci. E ci sono anche cose speciali che fa Mick, in particolare, che ti fanno dire “Oh, Ok, figo”. Sapete, i superpoteri , le abilità speciali. E con gli effetti speciali nel modo in cui vengono realizzati adesso, è possibile passare attraverso i corpi  e sentire gli odori, vedere le vene e roba simile. E’ forte il modo in cui li fanno. Lo fanno in post-produzione. C’è quello che facciamo come attori, ma credo che ciò che vende di più sono tutte queste cose extra che vengono aggiunte alla storia, cose che possono fare con gli effetti speciali, la gente dice ” hmmm, interessante, questo è diverso.”

D. Quindi sia Josef che Logan sono dei Bad Boys, ma con un cuore. Come ci si avvicina ai due ruoli in modo diverso pur avendo entrambi questo tipo di “vibrazione” similare che collega i due personaggi?
JD: Praticamente la prendi com’è. Sto iniziando a comprendere come Josef cammina, non è lo stesso, sapete, come si siede. E’ come se ci fosse una sorta di movenza felina nei vampiri. Credo che sto cominciando ad arrrivarci. E ‘un po’ più grazioso; sono più consapevoli dei loro movimenti, consapevoli di come vengono percepiti. Non è come il ragazzo da spiaggia di VM. C’è una maggiore consapevolezza delle percezioni e di come si desidera essere percepiti.

D. Qual è stato il tuo film di vampiri preferito di tutti i tempi?
JD: Lost Boys – ci sono cresciuto. Era così pauroso quando l’ho visto per la prima volta da bambino.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Cosa fa Josef? Come guadagna i suoi soldi?
JD: Ne parla nel primo episodio. E ‘più o meno un comune commerciante, un commerciante di fondi (borsa). E possiede immobili in città. Abbiamo appena girato questo fantastico episodio in cui – non so, questa è una specie di spoiler – c’è questo vampiro che mi fa sembrare un povero. Penso che sia forte. Arriva questo ragazzo, e si va diritto nella sua storia e in un certo senso lui mi fa uscire dal mio status sociale, il che è sorprendente e si scoprono alcuni punti sulla storia di Josef in merito. E’ l’episodio 12 che credo sarà molto, molto buono.

Moonlight-Detective.com: questo è che il nostro “colpo di scena” su Josef, proprio quando stanno iniziando le repliche?
JD: Uh, sì, c’è un colpo di scena, di sicuro, nell’episodio 12. E ‘divertente,’ perché neanche noi sappiamo esattamente come andrà, fino a quando questo sciopero non avrà fine e quindi creeremo nuove storylines.

D. Hai fatto delle ricerche sui vampiri prima di accettare questo ruolo? O ti ci sei  semplicemente trovato e l’hai interpretato?
JD: No, ho dovuto farne un po ‘perché non ero informato, onestamente, fino a quando ho iniziato ad entrare nel personaggio e poi ho pensato, dannazione, c’è così tanto da sapere. Devo continuare a fare ricerche mentre vado avanti, ma fondamentalmente sui romanzi  di Anne Rice romanzi cose del genere. La cose soggettive, come ho già detto molto è basato sulla fotografia e sugli effetti speciali, sono interessanti perché devi interpretarle soggettivamente come attore, come le movenze feline, e la capacità dei vampiri di percepire ciò che sta accadendo a qualcun altro, l’udito e quant’altro. Voglio dire, sono forti, questi ragazzi sono davvero forti. E poi hanno qualità individuali all’interno di questo genere, sai […]

D. Giusto, perché alcune delle regole sono cambiate da alcuni film a questo come no.
JD: Oh si, come il fatto che possiamo stare alla luce del giorno, le croci etc. Abbiamo appena girato questa scena in cui gioco a biliardo con Mick e tenere le stecche come una croce, ma è stato dannatamente carino, è stato figo.

D. Facendo Veronica hai trascorso molto tempo “sospeso” senza sapere che cosa sarebbe accaduto e se si sarebbe fatta un’altra stagione, e ora c’è questo sciopero che mette tutto in attesa. Cosa farai? Lo spettacolo non si ferma, ma tu non stai lavorando, come hai pensato di riempire i tuoi giorni e di far vivere questo personaggio, nel frattempo, tenendo tutto in stand-by?
JD: Sì, questa è una buona osservazione. C’è stato un colloquio pochi giorni fa in cui Les [Moonves] ha detto delle belle cose sullo show e sulla possibilità del rinnovo una volta che lo sciopero gli scrittori verrà risolto, il che è davvero fantastico. So che Alex ha lavorato veramente sodo, perché so che dovremo andare a scuola di moto e imparare a guidare moto di strada, dovremo accedere al corso professionale. Poi andremo in Australia per l’anno nuovo con mia moglie, e sarà divertente. Penso che passeremo con Alex il capodanno, e andremo in giro. E’ un grande, questo ragazzo! (ride) Scherzi a parte, uscire con lui è, uh, non so se voi ragazzi lo avete incontrato o intervistato, ma penso che sia un vero gentiluomo. E’ incredibile, siamo così fortunati ad avere il cast che abbiamo.

D. Mi chiedevo se ci sono altri progetti in cui sei coinvolto all’orizzonte? So che abbiamo parlato con te un po ‘di tempo fa e penso che si  Dreamland, il film di Timothy McVeigh …
JD: Quel  progetto non è più in cantiere. Non so se verrà rifatto, ma ho fatto qualche comunque qualche ricerca, nel caso in cui lo facciano. Penso di avere avuto qualche  buona idea di su questo personaggio, e se si farà credo che sarà davvero un buon racconto. Ho appena girato un cortometraggio con un gruppo di amici, si chiama Struck. Interpreto questo tizio piccolo e grazioso, molto diverso da altri personaggi che ho interpretato di recente, è stato un bel cambiamento di ritmo. Ci potrebbe essere qualche altro film in vista dove potrei entrare. Il fatto è che è difficile, perché se si gira un film per un mese in gennaio o febbraio e poi ad un tratto il telefilm ricomincia, li si lascia con un mezzo-film completo. La maggior parte delle persone ti vuole prendere in seconda posizione (non come attore principale), per così dire.

D. So che tutti sono preoccupati per lo sciopero degli scrittori. Penso che la popolarità dello show sia così forte che in caso che lo sciopero si protraesse per molti mesi, speriamo che questo non accada, ma sembra che potrebbe, siete fiduciosi che  Joel [Silver], e Warner Bros e CBS manterranno in vita lo show?
JD: Credo di sì. Davvero. Devo parlare per me, sapete, non è che posso parlare per i produttori, ma sì, penso che i nostri dati audience siano piuttosto forti, i nostri fans sono incredibili, quindi sì. Credo che siamo uno dei due show che hanno mostrato miglioramenti negli ascolti, che ovviamente è un ottimo segno. E ciò che ho detto in precedenza su Les parlando di una seconda stagione, credo che ci dia molta speranza.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Tornando al personaggio di Josef, hai parlato a lungo della sua interazione con Mick, ma non abbiamo mai visto come si sono incontrati e come sono diventati amici. Sai come sono diventati amici? È qualcosa che potremo vedere presto?
JD: Lo spero. Non l’abbiamo girato ancora, e non ho sentito alcuna storyline al riguardo, ma questa settimana succede qualcosa che si è svolta a più o meno al tempo del nostro incontro. […] Non era così cinico allora. Vedrete alcune cose del genere prossimamente, come flashback, io con la riga in mezzo. (ride)

Moonlight-Detective.com: Sembra forte!
JD: Sì, dovrebbe essere forte, credo che vi piacerà.

D. Rapidamente, il 12 ° episodio, sarà l’ultimo prima che voi ragazzi andiate in vacanza?
JD: Sì, sarà l’ultimo. Lo abbiamo appena concluso, circa tre giorni fa. [Episodio 1.11 "Love last forever" andrà in onda il 4 gennaio e l’episodio 1.12 "The mortal cure" andrà in onda l’ 11 gennaio] Credo che ci siano anche delle scene che vi piaceranno nell’episodio 11 dove Sophia vi farà impazzire. Q. No estabas en el piloto original , ¿cúanto del personaje de Josef tuvo que cambiarse dado que eres completamente diferente al actor original ?
JD: No sé si has visto el avance , yo sólo vi 6 minutos del original . El actor era muy bueno , pero mucho mayor . Era un mentor para Mick . Josef es eso , pero también un gran playboy , lo cuál no era la sensación que transmitía Rade Serbedzija. Ese es el cambio principal . Ese tío es increíble . Ha estado genial en cada película que ha rodado.

Q. ¿ Te llamaron para el papel , después de decidir reorganizar el reparto , o tuviste que seguir el procedimiento como todos los demás ?
JD: Creo que iban en otra dirección cuando Joel Silver les llamó , porque el personaje es muy similar al de Logan. Joel había trabajado con nosotros en esa serie ( VM ) durante tres años , y simplemente pensó que tal vez podríamos hacerlo . Tuve que ir a la cadena y al estudio y todo eso . Entonces , aún tuvimos que hacer una prueba , que fue la primera prueba cinematográfica que yo haya hecho . Es curioso porque todo el mundo está vestido y maquillado y tú ruedas una escena completa varias veces . Esto está bien porque te permite ensayar distintas cosas . No es como que lo haces una vez y fuera . Tú pruebas con varias cosas y ellos escogen lo que les gusta . Creo que Alex fue encantador conmigo . Me encontraba muy nervioso , pero él estaba muy entero.Me miraba cuando estaba haciendo mi trabajo y me sonreía fuera de cámara . Hizo que me rehiciera . Me ayudó a meterme en el papel .

Q. Te has ganado una sólida y amplia comunidad de fans en Verónica Mars , y muchos de ellos te han seguido en Moonlight ¿ Fue esto algo inesperado para ti?
JD: Tío , los fans de esta serie son increíbles . Supongo que , en general , me siguen desde VM . No sé si lo sabes , pero fuimos nominados al People´s Choice Award como mejor nueva serie dramática . El resto de los nominados lo son por Verónica Mars. Quiero decir que hay alguien del reparto Verónica Mars en cada una de las nuevas series nominadas . Así que no sé si es que los fans de VM están apretando el botón compulsivamente para lograr que nos nominen , lo que es increíble . Cuando yo rodaba Verónica, no pensaba que fuéramos lo primero que veía la gente . Es guay hacer una gira por los centros comerciales y encontrarte un montonazo de fans que te hacen sentir como “¡ Guau , la gente nos está viendo!

Q. Hablaste un montón, en la Comic Con de este año , sobre la historia de fondo de Josef, sobre el hecho de vivir 400 años y de su experiencias pasadas , como conocer a Mozart y a otros personajes históricos. Obviamente , con todo el respeto hacia los guionistas , pero ¿ cuánto sabes de hacia dónde se dirige Josef en los futuros episodios y de lo que vamos a saber de su pasado?
JD: Esa es una buena pregunta . En el episodio que se emitirá el viernes de esta semana descubriréis que Josef tiene razones muy personales para odiar el hecho de que Mick y Beth estén juntos . El tuvo una experiencia que , de algún modo , justifica su comportamiento hacia Mick y Beth. Ya sabéis que siempre está advirtiendo a Mick sobre cualquier cosa y ahora , descubrimos que tiene sus razones . Es un línea argumental muy buena y siento curiosidad por saber qué pensaréis de ella cuando veáis el episodio . Me siento orgulloso de él .

Q. ¿ Cómo llevas el hecho de ser el actor más joven del reparto e interpretar al personaje más viejo ?
JD: ¡ Tío , es la parte más difícil! Es muy divertido ver a Alex , que viene a ser mi mentor o como lo quieras llamar en la vida real ; es un tipo guay y resulta divertido que sea yo su mentor y le tenga bajo el ala ¿ Entiendes lo que quiero decir? Es como si fuera un hijo al que guías .Así que estoy empezando a pillar como es el personaje.. Esa fue la parte más dura al inicio , conseguir sentir que mi personaje es el más viejo y trabajar ese aspecto . Debo disculparme un poco con los fans , porque sé que eso estaba un poco ausente , pero estoy trabajando en ello.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Me preguntaba por la tensión que vemos entre Josef y Beth cuando coinciden en una escena ¿ Tienes idea de por qué o es algo que Sophia y tú habéis introducido ?
JD: No lo sé , ella es muy divertida en el set .Muy británica , obviamente, y hay determinadas cosas que dirá , referencias obscenas a diferentes cosas y todo eso . Ya sabes como “ quítate los pantalones , etc.” cuando estamos en mitad de una escena . Es divertido y ha sucedido como te lo cuento . Había tenido una idea y ya la estaba poniendo en práctica cuando ella empezó a “jugar” conmigo en mitad de la escena. Es la historia de Mick y Beth , pero sería obviamente dramática si yo pudiera hacer algo ofensivo hacia Mick.

Moonlight-Detective.com: Queda bien en escena . Es muy interesante .
JD: Gracias .

Q. ¿Cuáles son las diferencias y las similitudes entre trabajar en esta serie y trabajar en Verónica Mars?
JD: Esta serie es mucho más grande . El reparto es mayor y rodamos en el mítico Estudio 14 de la Warner Bros. , donde se rodaron películas como “Un tranvía llamado deseo “ o “Al Este del Edén” . En el mismo estudio . Quiero decir que ha visto mucha Historia y encima no está a tres horas (risas ) Es fantástico y puedes sentir que , definitivamente , es más grande . Incluso tienes para ti solo este gran y cómodo trailer. (risas )

Q. ¿ Sientes entonces como que hay más apoyo por parte de la cadena?
JD: Sí . Ya lo tuvimos en la serie anterior . Tuvimos un largo recorrido de tres años . Sé que estuvieron hablando de posibles lineas argumentales para una 4ª temporada de VM . Pero , sí , estoy muy contento de figurar en esta serie . Es divertido , no tienes que hacer nada extraordinario y multiplicas por tres el número de espectadores . No puedo pensar lo que … Quiero decir ¿ ocho millones ? Ni siquiera habré conocido a medio millón en toda mi vida. Cada semana entras en el hogar de los espectadores y es muy divertido encontrar gente por la calle que te conoce sin que tú les conozcas a ellos . Resulta chocante y muy , muy divertido .

Q. Creo que algo que distingue a Moonlight es que los vampiros son presentados de una forma más realista .No hay prótesis y esa clase de cosas en la serie .Me pregunto ¿ cómo te aproximas al elemento fantástico? ¿ Cómo incorporas eso a tu actuación ? Sé que hay un proceso por el que tu personaje es el más viejo , pero ¿ no ser humano ? ¿ Cómo funciona eso en tu mente?
JD: Sí , estoy de acuerdo .Supongo que lo asumes como actor y también es verdad que los efectos especiales ayudan mucho . Como cuando vuelas y todo eso . Por ejemplo las cosas que Mick hace. Ya sabes , poderes especiales , habilidades especiales . Y con lo adelantados que están los efectos especiales , puedes atravesar cuerpos , oler , ver las venas y cosas así .Es genial la manera en que lo hacen tras el proceso de post-producción . Está claro el trabajo que desarrollamos los actores ,pero también estoy convencido de que lo que vende son todas esas cosas extra que se le añaden a la historia , ya sabes , como los efectos especiales , que dejan a la gente atónita y planteándose “humm , esto es interesante , esto es diferente.”

Q. Josef y Logan son dos chicos malos , pero con corazón . ¿Cómo haces para abordarlos de manera diferente cuando tienen esa conexión entre sí
JD: Lo tomas como lo que es . Estoy empezando a pillar como camina Josef, como se sienta . Hay algo de felino en él y en todos los vampiros . Están llenos de elegancia , son conscientes de sus movimientos y cómo se les percibe . No es como el chico playero de VM . Hay más consciencia de las percepciones y de cómo vas a ser percibido .

Q. ¿ Cuál es tu peli favorita de vampiros?
JD ‘Lost Boys “ ( “ Jóvenes ocultos” 1987 ) Esa es la película que recuerdo haber visto cuando era un crío . Era muy guay . Me encanta esa peli.

Moonlight-Detective.com: ¿ Qué hace Josef?¿ Cómo consigue su dinero ?
JD: Hace mención a ello en el primer episodio. Tiene que ver con el hecho de que sea un inversor de fondos y posea un montón de patrimonio inmobiliario. Filmamos un capítulo en el que aparece un vampiro que hace que , a su lado , yo parezca un don nadie .Creo que es genial . Este tipo aparece , descubres sus orígenes y es como si me sacara de mi liga . Es el episodio 12 , que considero que es muy , pero que muy bueno .

Q. ¿ Hiciste alguna investigación sobre los vampiros antes de aceptar el papel ?
JD: No, hice un poco de investigación porque no estaba familiarizado con el tema . Básicamente las novelas de Anne Rice y ese tipo de cosas . Los aspectos subjetivos , basados en lo que vemos en el cine o en los efectos especiales , son interesantes , porque tú como actor has de interpretar subjetivamente , como con esos sentidos felinos y su habilidad para percibir sonidos o que algo se mueve . Quiero decir que [ los vampiros ] tienen una gran agudeza . Son muy , muy agudos .Y luego tienen cualidades individuales .Tienes un personaje dentro del género vampírico del que hemos creado nuestro propio género …

Q. Exacto , porque algunas de las “reglas” acerca de lo que los vampiros pueden o no hacer , cómo matarlos o cómo no , han cambiado .
JD: Sí, como que podamos caminar a plena luz del día , las cruces y cosas así . Tuvimos una escena en a que juego al billar con Mick y sostengo el taco formando una cruz . Fue estupendo .

Q. Con Verónica pasaste un montón de tiempo en suspense y no sabías ni qué iba a pasar con la serie ni si iba a volver , y ahora la huelga de guionista lo pone todo en la cuerda floja ¿ Qué haces ? La serie no ha concluído , pero tú has dejado de trabajar , ¿ cómo planeaste llenar tus días y seguir viviendo con el personaje en el ínterin , manteniéndolo todo en standby?
JD: Sí es un buen punto de vista . Hubo una entrevista hace unos días en la que Les [Moonves] dijo amablemente cosas muy buenas de nosotros y de las posibilidades de regresar una vez concluya la huelga . Sé que Alex ha trabajado muy duro y que ambos íbamos a ir a una escuela para aprender a pilotar motocicletas como profesionales . Y para acabar el año , iré con mi mujer a Australia, para pasar la Nochevieja con Alex .Va a ser estupendo , porque es un tipo genial y muy divertido . En serio , ya sólo pasar el tiempo con él es … No sé si le conocéis o si le habéis entrevistado , pero es un auténtico caballero .Somos afortunados de tener el reparto que tenemos .

Q. Me preguntaba si tienes algún proyecto en ciernes . Sé que hablamos contigo hace tiempo y que comentamos Dreamland , la película sobre la historia de Timothy McVeigh…
JD: Ese proyecto se ha caído .No sé si lo retomarán en algun momento , pero he hecho algunos deberes por si lo retomaran . Me parece que es una idea muy buena y que sería una historia realmente estupenda . He rodado , por otra parte , un cortometraje llamado Struck con un puñado de amigos . Interpreto a un tipo muy vivo , o como lo quieras llamar , muy distinto de los otros papeles que he hecho , lo que supone un cierto cambio de ritmo . Podría haber algunas películas en las que podría intervenir , pero es difícil porque si , de repente regresa la serie [ Moonlight ] , tendría que dejarlas a medio .

Q. Sé que todo el mundo anda preocupado por la huelga de guionistas . Creo, no obstante , que la popularidad de la serie es tan fuerte como para aguantar que la huelga se prolongue durante meses , lo que confiemos no ocurra , pero , si fuera así ¿ estáis confiados en que Joel [Silver] , la Warner Bros. y la CBS mantengan viva la serie ?
JD: Eso creo , aunque he de hablar por mí mismo . No puedo hablar por los productores, pero sí , nuestros índices de audiencia están siendo muy fuertes y nuestros fans increíbles ; así que sí. Creo que somos uno o dos los shows que han mostrado mejoras en los índices, lo cual es muy buena señal . Y luego está lo que dije antes sobre Les hablando de una segunda temporada . Creo que es muy esperanzador .

Moonlight-Detective.com: Volviendo al personaje de Josef, has hablado mucho acerca de su relación con Mick, pero no sabemos cómo se conocieron y cómo llegaron a ser amigos ¿Sabes cómo se convirtieron en amigos ?¿ Lo veremos pronto ?
JD: Espero que sí .No hemos rodado nada de eso , ni ha llegado a nosotros ninguna linea argumental en ese sentido , pero esta semana ocurre algo que sucede por la época en que le conocí .

Moonlight-Detective.com: ¡ Suena estupendo!
JD: Sí , y debería serlo . Creo que os gustará.

Q. Muy rápido ¿ Es el 12 el último episodio antes de que hagáis una interrupción?
JD: Sí que lo es. Lo hemos acabado hará tres días [El episodio 11 “Love Lasts Forever” se emite el 4 de Enero y el 12 “The Mortal Cure” el 11 de Enero] Creo que hay cosas del episodio 11 , especialmente el trabajo de Sophia , que os van a dejar abrumados . Lo sé.
